Cadet First Aider

Cadet First Aiders learn lifesaving first aid skills, and put these skills into practice working alongside Event Health Officers at a variety of community events in the Perth metro area.

Commitment: 60 hours per year

Is this you?

  • Are you interested in clinical volunteer work?
  • Are you aged between 16 and 17 years old and able to work in a professional workplace?
  • Are you friendly with a strong desire to help others?
  • Can you easily work solo and also as part of a team?
  • Are you physically able to perform CPR?

Participate with fellow volunteers and provide first aid at community events, with St John Event Health Services in Western Australia.

Please note, Cadet First Aiders must be 16 or 17 years old and as such parent or guardian permission is required at the time of application.

What your role involves

  • Attend a variety of events, generally within the metro area, and provide first aid support to attendees who require assistance
  • Ensure first aid skills are maintained and kept up to date
  • Ensure that equipment and vehicles are maintained in appropriate operational condition
  • Respect and value the diversity of the workforce
  • Represent St John Ambulance as a professional and positive organisation at all times
  • Work effectively with other team members and other service personnel at all times
  • Provide professional and appropriate first aid care as required in accordance with St John policies and guidelines
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of self and others within the workplace
  • Assist in any other area as requested by your Divisional or Operational Manager

The Application Process

  • Step 2 - Volunteer Member Services will call to book you into an information session
  • Step 3 - You attend the Information Session – this session includes a group interview and assessment activity
  • Step 4 - Application process is completed

If your application is successful you will be offered a volunteer position with Event Health Services and will be contacted for next steps.

If your application is unsuccessful Volunteer Member Services will contact you to offer you an alternative volunteer role.

Skills and Qualifications

  • You must obtain your Provide First Aid Certificate, provided free of charge from St John
  • Positive attitude
  • Great communication skills and presentation skills
  • Show initiative and enthusiasm, while also being able to follow instructions
  • Ability to work in a team
Skills you will develop

Along with learning lifesaving first skills, being a Cadet First Aider will develop your communication skills and build confidence by allowing you to engage with a wide variety to people. Being part of a large volunteer team will help you connect with other likeminded volunteers in the Perth area.

You will also form part of the St John Ambulance Event Health Services team who attend thousands of public events annually, and you will belong to a team that really makes a difference in people's lives

Recruitment Method

To become a volunteer with St John Ambulance Western Australia, you will be asked to complete an on-line application, including a medical questionnaire and submit a National Police check. The on-line application is available from: http://vip.stjohnambulance.com.au.

Ongoing training

All our volunteers are provided with the necessary training to enable them to carry out their role. To continue to operate in your role, you must maintain the competencies required and an appropriate level of fitness as roles are physically demanding.

All information concerning our volunteers is treated as strictly confidential at all times.

Expenses

Your volunteering for St John Ambulance should not cost you anything. We will reimburse all legitimate out of pocket expenses incurred during your time volunteering with us. You should talk to your supervisor to confirm what expenses you can claim.
