Making the decision to join our Student Ambulance Officer program will be one of the most important career decisions you ever make. Starting on the pathway to becoming a Paramedic is an extremely challenging, yet highly rewarding decision. 

Paramedics respond promptly and efficiently to all ambulance calls, provide pre-hospital ambulance care for the sick and injured and transport patients to and from medical facilities – while constantly monitoring the patients’ condition at all times.

Registered Nurse Pathway 

Registered Nurses who meet the following pre-requisites will be considered for the Student Ambulance Officer- Registered Nurse pathway

  • Bachelor of Science (Nursing) or equivalent degree 
  • Two years post graduate full-time relevant working experience 

Curtin University - Bachelor of Science Paramedicine Degree

After successfully gaining a position as a Student Ambulance Officer, you will commence the Bachelor of Science Paramedicine Degree at Curtin University whilst working full-time as a Student Ambulance Officer with St John. Credit for Recognised Learning maybe granted through Curtin University for those successful via the Registered Nurse pathway. Students that meet all academic and workplace requirements during this period will graduate as a St John Ambulance Paramedic with a Bachelor of Science Paramedicine Degree.

Some of the duties and responsibilities of the role include: 

  • Communicate effectively with patients, relatives, health professionals, and members of the public and other emergency services to ensure the best possible care for the patient is achieved
  • Interact effectively as part of the ambulance crew, with other ambulance crews and other emergency services to ensure the delivery of patient care is optimised
  • Complete Patient Care records and other reports as necessary and with a high level of care and accuracy

Qualifications, Skills Knowledge required: 

  • Bachelor of Science (Nursing) or equivalent degree 
  • Two years post graduate full-time relevant working experience 
  • Current unrestricted ‘C’ or ‘CA’ class driver’s license with no more than 6 demerit points 
  • Current First Aid Certificate (HLTAID003) 
  • Verify your eligibility to enter Curtin University 
  • Ability to work effectively within a team environment 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Resilience and self-confidence

Roster

Officers and Paramedics generally work a 2/ 2/ 4 roster which includes 2 days, 2 nights and 4 days off on a rotation basis. Day shifts are 11 hours and night shifts are 13 hours. Once you are a Student Officer, Operations, working on road you will be allocated a roster and a depot within the metropolitan area on a rotational basis.
